Typical Meals For One Day, 1876

Breakfast: Oatmeal and heavy cream, breakfast beefsteak with creamed potatoes, buckwheat cakes, bacon, hot syrup and melted butter, apple pandowdy with sweet cream, tea and coffee.

Noon: Green pea soup with diced salt pork, boiled ham and egg sauce, potato croquettes and escalloped tomatoes, homemade bread and freshly-churned butter, coleslaw, pickles, sweet ‘n sour, pudding and pie.

Evening: Creamed chicken and biscuits, cold sliced ham, baked potatoes and succotash, pickle and spiced peaches, cake and ice cream.

Under this steady barrage of carbohydrates, cholesterols and calories, small wonder many husbands buckled under, went to their just rewards prematurely and left their wives clad in widow’s weeds with the unpleasant prospect of having to fend for themselves.
